Viviane Hagner and Ciconia Consort present: Der blaue Reiter

On February 8, 2023 at 8:15 PM, the Ciconia Consort will play in the Small Hall of the Concertgebouw. The concert entitled Der blaue Reiter offers a unique concert program in which expressionism is central. Star violinist Viviane Hagner solos in Hartmann's violin concerto. Conductor Dick van Gasteren explains the connections between expressionism in music and visual arts.

Expressionism in music

Artists such as Kandinsky, Munch and Schiele were at the cradle of expressionist painting. They depicted personal feelings and experiences by distorting reality. This new style had a great influence on classical music.

Shostakovich's Chamber Symphony is a work filled with enormous passion, one of his most intense works.

Berg's Drei Stücke für Streichorchester, Hindemith's Fünf Stücke für Streicher and Ullmann's third string quartet – written in Theresienstadt – will also make a deep impression on the listener. Der blaue Reiter will be a concert you will not soon forget!

Viviane Hagner

Soloist Viviane Hagner made her concert debut at the age of 12 and performed as a soloist in Tel Aviv with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra a year later. Since then she has been a popular soloist with leading orchestras.

She is a fervent advocate of new and undiscovered music and has performed as a soloist in several world premieres. As a dedicated chamber musician, she has performed at renowned festivals. She also conducts outreach activities for audiences of all ages.

Ciconia Consort & Dick van Gasteren

Ciconia Consort is led by Dick van Gasteren. The professional orchestra, which celebrated its 10th anniversary last year, is an international company of young top musicians and regularly searches for unknown masterpieces and often performs them on Dutch concert stages for the first time.

Ciconia Consort receives national and international recognition through special thematic concerts at a high artistic level. Klassieke Zaken wrote about Ciconia: 'a dazzling ensemble, taken care of down to the last detail. Musicweb-international wrote: 'impressive unity and full string tone'. The ensemble has since released four internationally acclaimed CDs that are regularly heard on international radio stations such as ABC Classic (Australia), the German SWR2 and the British BBC. The orchestra can regularly be heard on Radio 4 in programs such as Avondconcert, Vrije Geluiden, Muziekfabriek, Diskotafel and Muziekwijzer. In the spring of 2021, live television recording was provided by NTR with the program De weg naar Hollywood , which was broadcast several times on NPO2 Extra.
