Thomas Beijer plays Satie
Thomas Beijer performs piano works by Satie, but also reads texts by the eccentric composer. All this with animations by Beijers in the background. This concert is part of our seasonal theme Storming Stormers. With Hemelbestormers we focus on the up-and-coming generation of top musicians. They present themselves with innovative programs, often in a personal way.
Thomas Beijer plays Satie
Thomas Beijrer
Pianist Thomas Beijer will fill an extremely varied Spotlight series in The Concertgebouw this season. The recent winner of the Dutch Music Prize offers a cross-section of his enormously broad repertoire. You will see tonight that he does not spend all his time behind the keyboard. He combines piano works by Satie with his own animated films.
Satie
Thomas Beijer wants to present Satie in a different way, he says. 'He is usually associated with soft parlor music. I think that's not quite right; often it's satire, it's parodies. He completely reversed everyday reality.' Beijer will talk about that side of Satie. He also reads from the composer's 'bizarre, memoir-like texts'. You will see moving, self-made illustrations with the music that Beijer performs. 'Everything changes with a bunch of sea cucumbers on a big screen. Or potatoes.'
