Jazz has a history of activism; in bending, letting go or rejecting conventions. Jazz enters into a serious conversation with the status quo. In its freest form, improvisation, jazz is a constant search for new forms of conversation. In the REFLEX series we invite makers to reflect on the world and its society. The compiler of this new concert in the series is drummer Sun-Mi Hong. Can be seen and heard in BIMHUIS Amsterdam.
Reflection on the world of today
Born and raised in In-Cheon, Korea, Sun-Mi Hong developed her unique perspective over the past eleven years from Amsterdam. Her signature style is based on groove combined with controlled outbursts. Initially her approach is often meditative, after which she always adds something unique to the performance. With her album A Self-Strewn Portrait she won an Edison Jazz in the National category in 2021. Her most recent album Third Page: Resonance was released on the international label Edition Records.
