About Rembrandt Frerichs Trio
Pianist Rembrandt Frerichs is internationally known for his artistic curiosity and innovative collaborations that constantly keep moving jazz forward. After playing together for more than 15 years, travelling the world to perform across continents and soaking up many different musical cultures, the Rembrandt Frerichs Trio recorded their seventh album together in 2021. In two full days, in a former church filled with various antique organs, the musicians chose compositions that had a universal quality about them. Taking the melody as their guide and keeping in mind their shared experience on stages across the globe, they played compositions that felt timeless and could connect across cultures.
While touring different venues worldwide, the trio discovered that some compositions shared a special kind of magic that translated wherever they were played. The pieces were often based on compositions and themes from different times and cultures; a Bach motif, a Chinese folk song, or a whiff of Armenian folklore. Beautiful, strong melodies that touched audiences no matter their background or culture.
As fairy tales told worldwide might have different characters but share the same plot: What it is to be human. The trio decided to create these kinds of ‘universal’ compositions, keeping them concise and powerful - melodies and songs that have a universal quality, touching listeners far and wide. For this album, they dreamed up music with strong, timeless melodies we all share as humans.
