Red Light Jazz - BOI AKIH DUO

Red Light Jazz is a multi-day jazz festival that takes place in and around the Red Light District in Amsterdam. It is, in particular, the exciting location, the internationally renowned and illustrious Red Light District in the old city centre of Amsterdam, that makes the Red Light Jazz Festival unique in the world. This year, De Waalse Kerk will again be the stage location of the festival, with a concert by BOI AKIH DUO on 9 June.

Always surprisingly new and yet completely recognizable

Guitarist and composer Niels Brouwer and singer and lyricist Monica Akihary, winner of the Boy Edgar Prize 2023, the most important Dutch prize for jazz and improvised music, have formed a duo under the name BOI AKIH since 1997.

Boundless curiosity has been driving BOI AKIH to new experiments and discoveries for more than twenty years. Starting from guitar and voice, BOI AKIH works on exciting and groundbreaking repertoire that highlights the layered nature of different musical traditions. In the constant interaction between the musicians and the sources they draw from, their unique sound is created, which is simultaneously unconventional and accessible, always surprisingly new and yet wholly recognizable BOI AKIH.

In BOI AKIH's musical projects, these deep, personal musical explorations result in a harmonious coming together of seemingly incompatible sounds, rhythms and tonalities. Akihary's warm and smooth voice and Brouwer's guitar playing offer the audience a glimpse into a world full of emotion and colour. A concert by this duo is a wonderful experience. Akihary's voice is exceptionally nuanced. With her precise timing, tone and charismatic personality, she immediately touches the listener's heart, just as Brouwer's abstract passages sound warm throughout.
