Randall Goosby plays Florence Price's Violin Concerto No. 2
The young violinist Randall Goosby is promoting his roots with the Second Violin Concerto by Florence Price. The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, will also play Brahms' Fourth Symphony and Dvořák's 'Carnival' Overture.
As a child, he randomly chose the violin, and now he is conquering the big stages as a new world star: Randall Goosby is once again a guest in Het Concertgebouw. It is not without reason that the young violinist called his debut CD Roots, which features African-American music. Goosby likes to promote his own roots. He also does this during his Amsterdam performance with Florence Price's Second Violin Concerto.
Price and Brahms
Florence Price wrote about herself: 'I have two disabilities: my sex and my race'. Nevertheless, she composed a wonderful violin concerto in 1952, a year before her unexpected death. The short work references spirituals but is primarily written in a classical style, related to Barber and Korngold. Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra – of which he was chief for many years – in Brahms' monumental Fourth Symphony. In the closing Chaconne, Brahms refers to Bach's masterpiece of the same name.
