Quatuor Modigliani - Der Tod und das Mädchen

The musicians of the French Quatuor Modigliani are very much at home in the Recital Hall in the Royal Concertgebouw, their first concert was held there in 2005. The four musicians examine the music of Haydn and Wolf and shed light on Schubert's beloved string quartet Der Tod und das Mädchen. The brand new work on the program is by Elise Bertrand.

Quatuor Modigliani

"Balance, transparency, symphonic understanding, certainty in style, their performance reached a very high and inspiring level," concluded the Süddeutsche Zeitung after a concert by Quatuor Modigliani. The French quartet, founded in 2003, is a welcome guest on major world stages and plays music ranging from the rock repertoire to commissioned compositions.

Schubert's Der Tod und das Mädchen

The Modiglianis have delved deeply into Schubert and released all his string quartets on CD in 2022. Of Schubert's quartets , Der Tod und das Mädchen , written between 1824 and 1826, is one of the best known. The work takes its name from Schubert's own song from 1817, in which death comes to take a young girl. Death reassures her: 'I am a friend, in my arms you can sleep peacefully.' Schubert provided even the grimmest passages with a mild patio – perhaps he too recognized death as a friend.
