Big Sound Amsterdam

This concert is part of Big Sounds Amsterdam.

Big Sounds gives way to bands and orchestras that fill the entire stage. This is the new heyday for the grand gestures in music, and Big Sounds is on top of it, with adventurous big groups setting the tone for the future. They play with guts and take up the challenge with new sounds and influences for which they want to make everyone enthusiastic.

This year, Big Sounds is spread over five concert evenings at five top locations, which are working together in a united manner for the first time: Paradiso, Meervaart, Bimhuis, Conservatorium van Amsterdam and the Concertgebouw.

About the creators

Nai Barghouti was born in Jerusalem in 1996 into a very musical family. From an early age, she played the flute (the instrument she was named after). She developed a unique sound by interweaving ornaments that you know from Arabic music with vocal improvisation from jazz: NaiStrumentation.

When you think of an orchestra, you think of classical music. But that is not what the Metropole Orkest plays. Jazz, pop, soul, funk, cabaret, musicals, film, and world music. From now and long ago. The Metropole Orkest enjoys worldwide recognition as the leading professional pop and jazz orchestra and has a pioneering role with its unique line-up.

The Amsterdams Andalusisch Orkest (AAO) was founded in 2011 to connect the Andalusian heritage in art and culture with the present. Our maker not only brings the music back to Europe, but combines it with (existing and self-written) stories, poems and theatre.

Robert Ames (1985) is a conductor to keep an eye on. An acclaimed curator who moves in the world of contemporary classical composers such as Philip Glass, Hildur Guðnadóttir and Steve Reich, but also collaborates with pop artists such as Taylor Swift, Frank Ocean and Radiohead.
