Merhem
With Melike Şahin, Het Zaantheater presents one of the most promising and most discussed Turkish artists of the moment. The versatile Şahin has been one of Turkey's biggest artists since the release of her debut album “Merhem”.
She sang in the soundtrack for the film Djam by the Algerian/French director Tony Gatlif, who also directed the video for 'Sevmek Suçsa Suçluyum'. Melike also made a name for herself in the world music scene, partly through her work with Israeli alternative world fusion producer Kutiman and with Israeli Oriental rock band Boom Pam .
Mediterranean Arabesque
On her first solo album, Melike collaborated with Mabel Matiz, Sabi Saltiel, Uri Brauner Kinrot van Boom Pam , Can Güngör, Emre Maliks, Elif Dikeç and Dijf Sanders. The partly retro style is reflected in the keyboards, the electro-baglama and the Oriental violins. She describes her style as "Mediterranean Arabesque", which is both innovative and bears traces of the singers who inspired her, such as Safiye Ayla, Müzeyyen Senar, Selda Bağcan, Ümmü Gülsüm and the Lebanese diva Fairouz.
