New music based on existential questions is the crux of this group. ‘Without music, life would be a mistake’ (Friedrich Nietzsche).

Luc Ex, originally the bass player for The Ex, has been bringing together forward-thinking musicians from all over the world for years, in various ensembles. His project The Philosopher is a combination of young talents on the one hand, and existential questions on the other. How do you transpose an urgent matter or statement into music? Hanne De Backer, Audrey Chen, Marta Warelis, Raphael Vanoli and Luc Ex are up for the challenge. Together they define the sound and color of each piece of music. All five will take part in the process of arranging the piece. Prior to a piece, the audience will be informed what it is about. The outcome will be ambiguous, dependent on the imagination of each person in the room. ‘A typical Luc Ex-bassline can be concise and condensed like a haiku poem, and at the same time full of character and melancholy. Through repetition this bassline can become an announcement for impending doom, emphasized by Luc Ex’s treatment of his instrument, bashing the wood in a compelling, physical way almost like good modern dance’ (de Volkskrant).
