Jazz and flamenco
You can say that Spanish jazz has fully embraced its flamenco tradition. Nowadays, musicians love to merge both styles into a new sound. A shining example of this is double bassist Manel Fortià. With his quintet Libérica he combines traditional Catalan singing, flamenco and jazz. The melancholy voice of Pere Martínez goes together here with the improvisations of saxophonist Eva Fernández, driven by an exciting rhythm section.
Catalan repertoire
Spanish double bassist Manel Fortià lived briefly in New York, collaborating with great jazz musicians such as Dave Liebman, Ari Hoenig and Chris Cheek. Back on his native soil, Manel applied his experience to the Catalan repertoire. He looks for similarities between traditional Catalan songs and flamenco through jazz in his compositions. He fully supports the belief that a folk tradition can only survive if it allows for innovation.
EJN Green Pilot Tour
Libérica takes part in the Green Pilot Tour, a project of Europe Jazz Network (EJN) co-financed by the European Union under the Creative Europe program 2022-2024. The goal of the Green Pilot Tour is sustainability, fair compensation, inclusion and gender balance in concert tours.
