Raw, energetic and contemporary: that's how L'Hijâz Car sounds. The French quintet has a unique line-up of oed (Arabic lute), tarhu (kind of violin), bass clarinet, double bass and percussion. Their music is equally unique and innovative, with Mediterranean and Arabic timbres, structures borrowed from modern classical music and the freedom and panache of jazz and impro. L'Hijâz Car shows how different cultures can intertwine and yield new beauty.
Limitless mix of jazz, classical and folk music from all over the world
L'Hijâz Car was founded in 2001 by oed player Gregory Dargent. The band collaborated with, among others, the Tuareg choir Lalla Tahra from Tamanrasset. In 2008 the album Cavaliers de l'Aurès was released, a collaboration with the Algerian diva Houria Aïchi. The most recent instrumental album under his own name was recorded in Paris. The self-titled album was received with great enthusiasm in the press.
