Lamsma/Vänskä - Nielsen's Violin Concerto

Sources of inspiration? From Brahms to Led Zeppelin

Thanks to Osmo Vänskä, the Matinee audience was introduced to many new composing talents. At this concert, it will be the South Korean Donghoon Shin, who has lived in London since 2014 and took master classes with this season's matinee composer, Unsuk Chin. From Shin, Vänskä presents a new work commissioned by the Los Angeles, Bamberg and Seoul orchestras. Shin is a musical omnivore who finds inspiration in Brahms and Led Zeppelin. Striking titles such as 'Kafka's Dream' and 'Of Rats and Men' illustrate his fascination with literature and film.

Simone Lamsma chooses her repertoire with a sense of adventure. She previously appeared in the Matinee in concerts by Mathilde Wantenaar and Sofia Gubaidulina. Carl Nielsen is a perfect choice for the collaboration with Vänskä. And then Brahms sounds. In seven long years, between 1877 and 1885, he composed one masterpiece after another: the 'Second', 'Third' and 'Fourth Symphony', the Violin Concerto and the 'Second Piano Concerto'. No other composer added comparable musical richness to the great symphonic repertoire in such a short time.
