Kronos Quartet + Sam Green -A Thousand Thoughts

In A Thousand Thoughts the Kronos quartet looks back on its fifty years of existence. Live music and film merge into a multimedia event about what music is, what listening means and how music can change the way we experience the world. In addition to music by all the great minimalists, there will be new work, music by non-Western composers and of course Black Angels by George Crumb, the work that led to the formation of the Kronos Quartet.

Looking back on fifty years of the Kronos Quartet in film and music

David Harrington founded the Kronos Quartet – which always remained different – in 1973 in the post-hippie era in San Francisco. The quartet did not play Haydn, but they did play a surprisingly rough version of Jimi Hendrix' Purple Haze and meditative American minimal music. They did not program abstract modernists - such as Stockhausen and Boulez - but they did program George Crumb, who expressed the war in Vietnam in a cinematic horror fantasy in which Schubert's Der Tod und das Mädchen goes together with romantic expressive modernism. Documentary maker Sam Green tells the exciting story of this unique string quartet live on stage.
