Kaisa's Machine
Originally from Finland, double bassist Kaisa Mäensivu earned her spurs in New York. In jazz clubs such as Smalls and Smoke she developed her rock-solid, groovy style of accompaniment. Recently she has come to the fore more and more with her own melodic compositions and with standards in which she sometimes also sings. Now she is touring Europe by train with the band with which she made her debut album: Kaisa's Machine. Top guitarist Jesse van Ruller joins in Amsterdam. Kaisa Mensivu started playing bass at the age of fourteen and studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. She was taught by Ron Carter, one of her great role models, especially during the period when he played with the Miles Davis Quintet. Linda Oh, Larry Grenadier and Paul Chambers are other bassists who are a major influence on Kaisa Mäensivu. She lives and works alternately in Helsinki and New York.
