Music to bridge cultural boundaries

The collaboration between the Dutch pianist Jeroen van Vliet and the Iranian percussionist Afra Mussawisade has already yielded many wonderful results in the past. Together they decided to record an album on which everything revolves around the harmonic richness of Jeroen's playing and the colorful palette of Afra's percussion, subtly supplemented with electronics.

Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh added soulful melodies. Now the three of them are playing music from that album, Gloom, which was released in 2022. Afra Mussawisade appears as composer on Gloom. He made the most contributions to the album, next to pieces by Jeroen van Vliet.

They have been playing together for years, in the band Sikeda for example, which has appeared on our stage several times. Afra grew up in Iran in a musical family and studied Persian classical percussion. In Europe he developed his own unique style. Afra considers rhythm his native language.

Boy Edgar Prize winner Jeroen van Vliet made a name for himself as a pianist in Paul van Kemenade's band and also plays in Eric Vloeimans' 'Levanter' together with Kinan Azmeh. This clarinetist from Damascus uses music to bridge cultural boundaries, including in Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble. Buy your tickets via this link .
