DATSKAT

In the new DATSKAT series, the Bimhuis mixes jazz, hip-hop and (neo)soul and gives a stage to the established and new generation of artists who represent this sound. With this edition: JaRon Marshall.

JaRon Marshall conquered festivals and venues all over the world as the keyboard player for the Black Pumas, the psychedelic soul band from Austin, Texas. In recent years, the group has received no fewer than seven Grammy nominations. Now JaRon comes with his own music, which he describes as a happy marriage between jazz and hip-hop. His band includes saxophonist Brian Donohoe, who played on the first albums of Snarky Puppy.

JaRon Marshall gathered a variety of Austin musicians for his first solo releases The Gold Tapes, Vol. 1-3 and The Black Power Tape . This year followed his largely instrumental album Earth Sounds , on which he steps forward as a beat maker and producer. Examples are jazz-hip-hop influencers like Robert Glasper and Chris Dave, but also old school soul giants like Curtis Mayfield and Stevie Wonder.

'JaRon Marshall explores feelings of rage, power, pride, and, ultimately, peace… the myriad of emotions that come with being Black in America, all against a backdrop of soothing, soulful music' (Okayplayer).

Fusion hip-hop group

The support act is provided by Amsterdam fusion hip-hop group RADIOHOP. Inspired by Herbie Hancock, Kaidi Tatham and Azymuth, they explore everything between groove and jazz. In the fall of 2023 they will release their first album Kill Your Darlings with Kid Sublime.
