Grip in corona time
Ombre/Marbre by Peter-Jan Wagemans was supposed to sound in 2020, but then had to be postponed due to corona measures. For his orchestral work, Wagemans drew inspiration from Victor Hugo's poem Je suis fait d'ombre et de marbre . Wagemans associates the central metaphor of the spiral staircase with the corona era, with its life cycles that no one seems to have a grip on.
Georg Nigl sings Eisler's latest work
The Austrian star baritone Georg Nigl returns to the Matinee with Hanns Eisler's latest work, partly written in Mexico, on the run from the Nazis, partly in the GDR. Unheroic, unpathetic, but poignant notes in which the spring sun finally resounds. James MacMillan will also perform the Dutch premiere of his Fifth Symphony . The subtitle 'Le grand inconnu' refers to the third element of the Holy Trinity: the Holy Spirit, to whom the Catholic Scot pays tribute in this work.
