Ives Ensemble - Why Patterns?

Morton Feldman was a walking paradox: a huge man and an animated talker who also created the 'whisperiest' oeuvre in music history. The Ives Ensemble dedicates a portrait concert to the enigmatic Feldman, who, together with his art brothers John Cage and Christian Wolff, is counted among the experimental New York School. The programme includes three works by Feldman, two dedicated to him and one he arranged. Unique and hypnotically beautiful.

The hypnotic sound world of Morton Feldman

The Ives Ensemble, a regular guest at the Muziekgebouw, made a deep impression with Feldman's enchanting Second String Quartet, lasting more than five hours. Tonight they play two relatively short works and the drawn-out Why patterns? , the title of which can best be taken literally. Playing independently of each other, the musicians create a hushed soundscape where time and simultaneity lose their meaning.
