Het Mysterie Sjostakovitsj (Dutch spoken)

Dmitri Shostakovich's life is shrouded in riddles and myths. Did the composer express his opinions on the communist regime in his music, or not? Or are the sounds of hope and gloom in his compositions expressions of his mood? And why did he strive to emphasize his loyalty to the Soviet Union to the outside world, and why did he hold high political positions at the end of his life? Russian historian and author Michel Krielaars and musicologist Saskia Törnqvist will discuss this topic at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam in an attempt to debunk some of these persistent myths.

Shostakovich 120 years

In the 2025-2026 season, which marks the 120th anniversary of Shostakovich's birth, the Concertgebouw will be devoting special attention to this intriguing composer. This will include numerous concerts. The Ferschtman family will give three concerts focusing on Shostakovich's chamber music, and the Jerusalem Quartet will perform all of Shostakovich's string quartets in five concerts. There will also be two special evenings delving deeper into Shostakovich's life through words and music: a special live broadcast of the podcast "Betrouwbare Bronnen" (Reliable Sources) on September 21st, and an evening with Russian historian and author Michel Krielaars and musicologist Saskia Törnqvist.
