Marc Bouchkov plays Brahms' Violin Concerto

Hannu Lintu conducts Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony

For his debut with the orchestra, the Finnish conductor Hannu Lintu puts Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony on the music stands. That symphony was Shostakovich's rehabilitation after strong criticism from Stalin and at the same time an indictment of that same regime. Stalin was pleased to hear Shostakovich compose a hymn to the Soviet hero, while the suppressed listeners in the hall were deeply moved by the deep pain and sharp irony they heard.
