God’s own musicians Insomnio

Birdsong: nature's most elusive song has been a source of inspiration for musicians for centuries. Tonight, Utrecht ensemble Insomnio will reprise two brilliant 21st-century pieces in which birdsong plays the leading role. The highlight is Vanapriya, beloved forest by Korean Seung-Won Oh, a work that Insomnio premiered in the Muziekgebouw in 2020. In addition, new work by Jacob ter Veldhuis and the spectacular Bird Concerto for ensemble and live electronics by Englishman Jonathan Harvey will be performed.

Bird music of unearthly beauty

Harvey wrote a masterful tribute to Olivier Messiaen, the composer in whose oeuvre birds are omnipresent, with his wittily titled Bird Concerto with Piano Song (2001). Harvey delivered a tour de force by forging piano, ensemble, live electronics and recordings of forty Californian songbirds into music of unearthly beauty. De Volkskrant: 'the seamless fusion between speaker and ensemble sound ensures that the music remains captivating from beginning to end.'

Monthly fringe programme in collaboration with the Conservatory of Amsterdam

Three students from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (Jasmine Karimova, Jaime Peña and Sean Haid) curate their own concert series. The mini concerts reflect on concerts from the programme in the Grote Zaal and offer a new perspective on the concert experience.
