Tradition imbued with new life

Since the 1970s, the tradition of performing Joost van den Vondel's 'Gijsbrecht' has been disappearing. Composer Jan van Maanen is changing this. He has rewritten this magnificent 17th-century play into an opera, in collaboration with Nederlands Concertkoor. The opera is written in a contemporary, accessible style. Follow the lives of Gijsbrecht, his wife Badeloch and the people of a youthful Amsterdam in their fight for freedom.

Composer and conductor is Jan van Maanen. Nederlands Concertkoor and symphony orchestra Caecilia Camerata perform with 8 soloists, including Frank van Aken and Jeanette van Schaik. This performance has surtitles in both modern Dutch and English.
