Fleur Barron and Julius Drake
During the pandemic, mezzo-soprano Fleur Barron regularly visited her fellow townsman, pianist Julius Drake. They played together about twice a week. "Just for fun: what kind of music shall we learn?" When Drake was asked to bring three young vocalists to Amsterdam, Barron was of course there. Together they play the program Homeland, dreams and childhood , in which Barron explores all her roots. From China to America and everything in between.
Homeland, dreams and childhood
What is Fleur Barron's motherland? That's a complicated question. She was born in Ireland, is half Singaporean and half British, grew up in Hong Kong and studied in America. 'Lots of influences, and yet I realized a few years ago that I had never sung an Asian piece before.' In the time of the pandemic, she has delved into all her backgrounds. 'In this recital I present them all equally. A song by Zubaida Azezi, for which I am especially learning Uyghur, is completely right next to works by Dvořák, Brahms and Ives.' There is new work by Huang Ro and Alex Ho, both of Eastern origin, but living in the West. A lyrical and adventurous program from Barron, who was called a "charismatic star" by the Boston Globe .
