Semyon Bychkov conducts Schubert and Beethoven

Semyon Bychkov opens the concert with Schubert's "Unfinished" Eighth Symphony . Why this lyrical work has only two movements is unknown. Did Schubert stop because he felt he couldn't surpass Beethoven? In any case, he never personally experienced the work's later popularity. Twenty years earlier, Beethoven composed his Second Symphony , a work brimming with vitality and bursting with musical inventions and jokes that still shocked audiences on the threshold of the nineteenth century.
