Enemy ft. Kit Downes, Petter Eldh & James Maddren
Monster trio from London and Berlin break new ground with a cross between jazz and chamber music at Bimhuis.
Enemy ft. Kit Downes, Petter Eldh & James Maddren
Rare ability to make complex music sound simple
The British pianist takes a new path with the trio Enemy. Their self-titled debut on Edition Records sounded tight and bouncy, full of surprising twists. Their second album, Vermillion, on ECM Records, sounds like calm, controlled chamber music. The similarity is the clever structure and melodic power of the music. Five compositions on Vermillion were written by Kit Downes and five by band member Petter Eldh, plus a variation on 'Castles Made of Sand' by Jimi Hendrix.
Petter Eldh made a name for himself as a double bass player in Berlin and previously played on our stage with the group Koma Saxo. Since college, pianist Kit Downes has been playing with his former roommate James Maddren, Enemy's third band member. This drummer from London has previously worked with Marc Copland, Gwilym Simcock and Jacob Collier, among others.
