Mendelssohn's Scottish Symphony

Mendelssohn composed his 'Scottish' symphony after a journey through England and Scotland. It is a very visual series of tableaux vivants in the rugged Scottish Highlands. Mendelssohn knows how to bring bygone times to life: you hear the clash of knights' weapons and see the mud from the horses' hooves flying through the air! In addition to Mendelssohn's energetic symphony, mezzo-soprano Catriona Morison sings Mahler's melancholic Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen about a lost love.

Edo de Waart

Edo de Waart is a living legend. He began his long conducting career as assistant conductor to Leonard Bernstein at the New York Philharmonic, after which he spent no less than 16 years as chief conductor of San Francisco, Minnesota, Sydney, Hong Kong, Antwerp and Milwaukee orchestras. He was the conductor of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. He has been an honorary conductor of that orchestra for almost twenty years. And it is still magic whenever de Waart stands before 'his Radio Phil'.
