Birth of the Beat tells a brand new story about the oldest instrument in existence: the drum. For thousands of years, it has moved with humans worldwide, from Africa to all other continents. For example, drums and beats have undergone a fascinating development, from the first simple drum to elaborate drum sets and drum computers.

Yet the rhythmic DNA remains unchanged in the music we hear every day. As Drums United demonstrates in this spectacular performance, singing, dancing and virtuosity are inextricably linked to drums. We meet drummers from Senegal, Venezuela, Turkey and Bangladesh on the initiative of Lucas van Merwijk. This Dutch drum virtuoso made a name for himself worldwide with major Latin orchestras, including his own Cubop City Big Band.
