CvA Symphony Orchestra - Mystical and Minimal
What is the meaning of life? That is the question the solo trumpet asks in Ives' The Unanswered Question. We find more mysticism in John Adams' Harmonielehre – the title is a nod to Arnold Schönberg's 1911 book. In this work full of surrealistic dreams, Adams combines late 19th-century chromatic harmonies with the compositional techniques of minimal music. The second movement's climax echoes the dissonant 'scream' in Mahler's Tenth Symphony.

Conductor Ryan Bancroft comes home with this concert, as it were. He graduated in 2017 from the National Master of Orchestral Conducting, a joint course of the Conservatory of Amsterdam and the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. Since then, he has had a successful career: he is the principal conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and, from the 2023-2024 season, also of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Stockholm.
