Antonín Dvořák's 'From the New World'
Antonín Dvořák's Ninth Symphony , 'From the New World', is one of the most popular symphonies ever written. The composer was appointed conservatory director in New York. He discovered the music of the Indian and African-American people and incorporated folk melodies into the symphony. The music evokes panoramic American vistas, but also betrays a yearning nostalgia for his Bohemian homeland. The lovely second part is one of the megahits of classical music.
Georges Bizet
Georges Bizet's only symphony, the Symphony in C , is an energetic and playful work that puts the classical symphony style of Haydn and Mozart in a bright French light. You can call it music of eternal youth: the composer was only seventeen at the time. An early direct hit, then, from the man who would later write the world-famous opera Carmen .
