Dvořák's String Serenade
With his String Serenade , Antonín Dvořák wanted to compose a light work that was much to enjoy, a light piece among the serious symphonies and string quartets he had composed. The five parts are successively lilting, elegantly dancing, humorous, lyrical and exuberant. To this day it remains one of Dvořák's most popular compositions. With Beethoven's beautifully melodious Cavatina, the Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra shows how melodiously they can play.
Christianne Stotijn sings Il tramonto
Christianne Stotijn sings the beautiful Il tramonto by the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi with her warm, passionate mezzo-soprano. Il tramonto , based on a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley, is about the sunset, is lyrical and full of drama, but at the same time intimate. In addition, Stotijn sings Chausson's Chanson perpétuelle , one of the French composer's two great orchestral songs, about the grief of an abandoned woman. The arrangement for piano, strings and soprano is by the composer himself.
