Schubert's Sonatine in D major
Schubert's Sonatine in D major still carries the spirit of Mozart, with its opening freely reflecting the unison passage from Mozart's Sonata in E minor. Mozart composed that sonata in Paris in 1778, the time when his mother passed away. It is the only instrumental work by the composer in this key.
Beethoven's First Sonata
Beethoven's first sonata for fortepiano and violin in D major (interestingly, also beginning with unison arpeggios) is dedicated to Antonio Salieri, one of Beethoven's composition teachers. Since the film Amadeus, Salieri is mostly remembered as Mozart's alleged poisoner, a sad fate for such a talented composer.
Schubert – Sonatina D major op.137
Mozart – Sonata e minor K304/300c
