Spectacular journey of discovery through time, space and imagination
In addition to nine acoustic instruments, Severade features Maya Fridman's electric cello and futuristic robot instrumentation that artist Rob van den Broek designed especially for the piece. At the same time, Severade is a cycle of love, in which Shalygin fuses emotional 'Eastern' folklore and the rational 'Western' worldview. The title is a contraction of the Russian words 'sever' ('north') and 'serenade': Shalygin describes the work as Love songs facing the North Sea'. Fasten your seat belts for a spectacular journey through time, space and imagination.
