West End Big Band and the Syrian Big Band

This project brings together the West End Big Band and soloists from the Syrian Big Band, creating a unique fusion of Syrian and Western music styles. Traditional Syrian music is specially arranged for big band.

After a successful try-out in June 2023 and a tour in three cities in the Netherlands, we are excited to share this special mix with you this year. The Syrian Big Band, founded in 2005, has developed a unique repertoire by combining Syrian and Arabic music with jazz. By working with international composers, including Dutch trumpeter Gerard Kleijn, the band has expanded its global presence since 2012.

Performances at venues such as the Elb Philharmonie in Hamburg and the North Sea Jazz Festival showcase their boundless musical explorations. The program includes not only jazz standards, but also oriental soloists who collaborate with the West End Big Band, resulting in an enchanting fusion of musical cultures.

Artists

Amel Sdiri : a versatile singer from Brussels, specialized in classical singing and currently studying at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels.

Kinan Abuakel : Renowned musician, known for his masterful command of the buzuq.

Oene van Geel : Versatile composer and violist, known for his work in jazz, Indian music and more.

Yiorgos Bereris : Pianist and composer, inspired by jazz and Balkan traditions.
