Bartók & Beyond Asko|Schönberg & Joseph Puglia

In the Asko|Schönberg series & Beyond in Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, violinist Joseph Puglia always takes a composer as a starting point and examines the influences and relationships with other composers. This time, he explores the boundaries of classical music from the Hungarian composer Béla Bartók (1882-1945). Bartók collected thousands of folk melodies from his native country, but also from Algeria and Turkey, for example. He incorporated this folk music into his own compositions. He wrote his trio Contrasts for jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman. As one of the most leading composers of the 20th century, Bartók consciously stepped outside the classical paths.

Compositions beyond the boundaries of classical music

The other composers who can be heard during this edition of & Beyond also do not limit themselves in mixing styles. Helena Winkelman once played in a rock band and that can be heard in her Ciaccona for violin. Even though the chaconne is an old baroque music form, she asks the violinist to 'rock' as on an electric guitar. Trödelmarkt by Richard Ayres is an anti-concert for violin in which he places the virtuosity of the performer in an ironic light. It shoots from baroque to nightclub music, supplemented with a range of self-made audio recordings.

Echoes of Nothing

Echoes of Nothing is the monthly fringe programme in collaboration with the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. From 19:45 to 20:00, prior to the concert in the Main Hall, Pietro Elia Barcellona will play solo works for double bass in the Entrance Hall.
