Apollon Musagète Quartet

'If Apollo had played the violin instead of the lyre, it would have sounded exactly like this.' This brilliant comment was written by the Süddeutsche Zeitung following a performance by the Polish Apollon Musagète Quartett. In addition to the traditional string quartet repertoire, the musicians regularly perform commissioned works, inspired by their spiritual mentor: the god Apollo. The Poles like to celebrate music from their own country, and prefer to play works by a Polish composer at each concert. Tonight is lavish in that respect: Szymanowski's First and Penderecki's Third string quartet will be heard alongside Dvořák's Ninth string quartet , op. 34.

Dvorak Op. 34

In late 1877, the year in which two of his children died young, Dvořák wrote his Ninth String Quartet in twelve days. In its prevailing melancholy, the work bears the traces of this great loss. During its completion, Dvořák received a letter from Johannes Brahms, in which the famous maestro informed Dvořák that he had recommended him to his publisher Simrock. In gratitude, Dvořák dedicated the quartet op. 34 to Brahms.
