Towards the end of his life, Tchaikovsky wrote a great work: the Sixth Symphony, nicknamed 'Pathétique'. The composer wrote about this opus, his swan song: 'I love her as I have never loved any of my musical children. In this symphony, I can say without exaggeration, I put my whole soul.' Tchaikovsky conducted the first performance in Saint Petersburg in October 1893, but nine days later, he died - quite unexpectedly.
