Aidan Mikdad plays Beethoven

Aidan Mikdad says of Beethoven: 'For me, Beethoven is the greatest composer of all time. His first sonata is dedicated to Haydn in respect to him as a teacher. But very different from Haydn's style, super spontaneous, full of energy and very free. Full of the youthful spirit of Beethoven with obvious characteristics of his early period. His Sonata No. 31 , op. 110, written at the end of his life, is one of the greatest sonatas and is part of the triptych last sonatas (op. 109, 110 and 111). There are hardly any works that go through such a journey from the first to the last note. The emotional scope and eloquence is sublime, it goes from the most sad and personal to a kind of avalanche in the last few bars. The two fugues in the last movement are regarded as the greatest fugues since Bach'.

Liszt

Mikdad: 'Liszt was one of my first favorite composers. Apart from being a composer and pianist, he was also known for his great transcriptions of other composers. With nearly a hundred composers whose works he has arranged, the arrangements of Schubert's work are among the most important. Schubert's Études d'exécution transcendante are actually also adaptations of his early self, as there are two earlier versions of these études. One from when Schubert was 15 years old and another from when he was 26. I've played all three versions and grew up with the first 'easy' version.

Scriabin

Finally, Aidan plays Mikdad Scriabin's Third Sonata . Mikdad: Scriabin's Third Sonata has been one of my favorite pieces since I was 13. It is his greatest sonata of the early period. He was especially inspired by Chopin and Liszt on this part of his development. While his departure from romantic harmonies and style is already evident in the finale of this sonata'.
