Rossini, Mozart and Schubert
Rossini's merry and swirling overture to his opera Il barbiere di Siviglia forms the prelude to Mozart's unique Piano Quintet , KV 452. When he had completed this music, Wolfgang wrote to his father: 'This is the most beautiful thing I have ever made.' The final movement of Schubert's String Quintet is devoted to variations on his well-known song Die Forelle , about how a playful and innocent fish is outwitted by an angler. The composer flawlessly strikes the different moods in his music.
