100 cymbals - Percussion de Strasbourg
Ready to dive into 'the abyss of vibration'. 100 Cymbals is a unique visual and acoustic spectacle that the Japanese sound wizard Ryoji Ikeda developed for the master percussionists of Percussions de Strasbourg. A hundred cymbals – that could become a deafening cacophony. But Ikeda creates an intoxicating soundscape of drones and electronic sound transformations. A whisper-soft rustle swells to an imposing climax: a real delusion.
100 cymbals - Percussion de Strasbourg
An intoxicating soundscape through a hundred cymbals
On stage are a hundred cymbals on navel-high stands arranged in a square. Ten percussionists clad in black move through the dim lighting, touching, striking and playing the cymbals in every imaginable way. The cymbals are specially made by manufacturers Yamaha and Turkish. The program opens with Ikeda's adaptation of a conceptual work by John Cage from 1985. Cage made But what about the noise of crumpling paper… for the centenary of the birth of the Strasbourg artist and poet Hans Arp and dedicated it to Percussions de Strasbourg.
