Waag Open: de zachte atlas (workshop door Jan Rothuizen)

How do you navigate your way through the city? Are you guided by Google Maps or are you still surprised by a turn into the unknown?

During this spring edition of Waag Open, we will explore the imagination of cartography through the unique perspective of visual artist Jan Rothuizen

In his book De Zachte Atlas (2013), Jan Rothuizen takes you on his journey of discovery through Amsterdam with his visual narratives, redefining the traditional atlas. Instead of hard boundaries and factual maps, Rothuizen embraces the personal and the human. His drawings take you to unexpected places, where reality mixes with imagination. The drawings take you on a journey and challenge you to see the world with new eyes. This evening, Rothuizen will share his knowledge on 'the art of observation' and you will make your own atlas of your living environment and personal perspectives.

About Jan Rothuizen

Jan Rothuizen (1968) is a visual artist. His work has been translated into English, Spanish and Chinese. His work is shown at film festivals and museums. He made the interactive award-winning documentary “Refugee Republic” about a refugee camp in Iraq and the VR animated film “Drawing Room” and most recently his work was seen at the Venice Architecture Biennale in collaboration with Killing architects
