Dave Kellas, a graduate of International Business and Innovation Studies at Inholland University of Applied Sciences, found his internship during the ITEA fair in 2016. He currently works full time at popular online magazine VICE.
"ITEA made the connection. It was like a jigsaw puzzle that ITEA allowed to fall into place and me to realise that VICE was a possibility."
So… how did you land this dream internship?
ITEA made the connection. It was like a jigsaw puzzle that ITEA allowed to fall into place and me to realise that VICE was a possibility. I had – of course – always liked the company and, after speaking with them, I discovered that there was a perfect internship that they weren’t actually advertising for during the fair. After I sent my application, I waited for around a month (it helped that my previous internship was with a website that was in the digital network of VICE, so I asked for the CEO to put in a good word for me) and then went for an interview. A week later they hired me!
What’s working for VICE like?
It’s a perfect fit for me. The people are good and I thoroughly enjoy the team that I work with. The working environment is certainly fast paced, with lots of different client projects running simultaneously and new ones can come in any time. There is a buzz around the office that I really like and which – once you get used to it – allows you to make the most of the experience and create opportunities for yourself. People don’t simply treat me as an intern, because there is space to show colleagues what you are capable of and you can slowly build up trust with people so that you are really treated the same as any other employee.
What’s your plan for the future?
We’ll see what the future holds, but either way I’m super happy with the trajectory that this internship has now put me on. I have just turned my first internship (September to February) into another one which lasts until August. Overall, I will have got a year experience there – and I’m hoping it will turn into a job, as I would love to work there!
