The mother of modern dance
Instead of seeking to articulate movement, Martha Graham embodied movement, and her body of work is as distinctive as it is timeless. Originally classically trained, Martha wanted to focus on the foundational movements of dance rather than the elaborate embellishments of something like ballet. She soon founded the Martha Graham Dance Company, the oldest dance company in America, and went on to become one of the most prolific choreographers of her time. She was highly decorated throughout her life, was the first dancer to perform in the White House and counted the US Presidential Medal of Freedom among her many accolades.
