Dutch saxophone-icon Benjamin Herman stirs things up with the big band of the Conservatory of Music in Utrecht, led by Thelonious Monk Competition winner Ilja Reijngoud. Saxophonist Benjamin Herman takes a break from his New Cool Collective for a guest performance with another great band, formed by enthusiastic students of the Conservatory of Utrecht. This HKU Big band strives for the ideal big band sound: versatile, close-knit and with perfect timing. The band traverses different styles and genres in a surprising repertory that regularly goes off the beaten path. Conductor Ilja Reijngoud made name as a trombone player and composer; his honors include the prestigious American Thelonious Monk BMI Composition Award. The HKU Big Band has previously collaborated with international guest soloists such as Deborah Carter, Lilian Vieira, Shirma Rouse, John Ruocco, Dick de Graaff and Bert Joris, and with the ensemble Flat Earth Society.
