‘Striking and deep’, says Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant about Avalon Songs by saxophonist Yuri Honing and pianist Wolfert Brederode. The album was inspired by the old Celtic myth of an island shrouded in mist, the last resting place of King Arthur, where his sword Excalibur is said to be forged—a metaphor for a time when everyone feels that everything will change, but nobody knows how. Alongside compositions by Honing and Brederode, Avalon Songs contains classics by Marlene Dietrich and Billy Strayhorn that are performed in a minimalistic, almost impressionistic way. Yuri Honing has reached the international top and has worked with many greats including Pat Metheny, Paul Bley and Charlie Haden. Wolfert Brederode has made waves with his albums on the renowned label ECM.
