Closing night

On the closing evening of the Red Light Jazz Festival, the BIMHUIS presents two bands which exceed all expectations and forge their own paths. Witch’n’Monk by singer/guitarist Heidi Heidelberg and flutist Mauricio Velasierra was previously known as Bitch’n’Monk. ‘Latin American flutes, electronics, complex vocal lines with a touch of Frank Zappa lyricism and a punk aesthetic: you have never heard anything like Witch’n’Monk,’ says John Zorn, who will release their new album on 22 May on his label Tzadik.

LIUN + The Science Ficton Band is the creative product of singer Lucia Cadotsch, aka LIUM, and Wanja Slavin on synthesizers. Digital and analogue worlds meet in their songs, where dark beats are linked to fragile melodic contours. The duo draws inspiration from strong female characters in film and music, from Kill Bill and Princess Mononoke to Peaches and Foxy Brown. Lucia Cadotsch previously performed at the BIMHUIS with the project Speak Low, which has received 5-star-reviews in The Guardian and Downbeat. ‘Cadotsch’s singing has an intensity of its own’ (Downbeat).
