The trumpet player as narrator

"I want listeners to feel like they're in a movie," says Theo Croker about his new album BLK2LIFE || A Future Past. He composed the music as a soundtrack, with the trumpet player as narrator. The story is about his African-American roots and his vision for the future of his culture. Guests on the album include Wyclef Jean, Ari Lennox and Gary Bartz.

Great promise of American jazz

Theo Croker plays with his quartet at the BIMHUIS. He is seen as the great promise of American jazz, but he prefers to see himself as part of a larger whole, which also includes hip-hop, soul and afrobeat. At a young age he built up experience as a band leader, in the wake of his teacher Donald Byrd and inspired by his grandfather Doc Cheatham. On his breakthrough album Afro Physicist he collaborated with two other greats, singer DeeDee Bridgewater, who discovered him, and trumpet hero Roy Hargrove.
