Belgian sensation Steiger explores the borders of jazz with fascinating soundscapes and elusive melodies, without losing sight of compact song structures. On its recent EP Brick Smoke Basement, the band joins forces with Australian producer Joe Talia, known from collaborations with sound artists such as Jim O’Rourke and Oren Ambarchi. The result sounds organic and full of contrast, with a special role for the synthesizers of pianist Gilles Vandecaveye-Pinoy. Steiger, based in Ghent, started out as a next generation piano trio, with its ears open to jazz as well as electronica, free improvisation and (neo-)classical. After the albums And Above All (2017) and Give Space (2018), the band has reached a new phase in its development. 2021 sees the release of a third album, which will emphasize sound exploration, synthesizers and prepared piano.
