South African jazz

The Metropole Orkest Big Band has previously paid tribute to American jazz legends Oliver Nelson, Quincy Jones and Thelonious Monk. Now it's time for South African jazz. Under the direction of trumpeter and conductor Marcus Wyatt, the orchestra plays a cross-section of this beautiful, richly varied genre. With music by Dudu Pukwana, Abdullah Ibrahim, Johnny Dyani, Winston Mankunku, Bheki Mseleku, Hugh Masekela, Jonas Gwangwa and Zim Ngqawana, among others. Special guest is vocalist Siyabonga Mthembu.

The South African trumpeter, composer and conductor Marcus Wyatt lived in the Netherlands for a year during his early career. He then played with Fra Fra Sound, Sean Bergin's MOB, Paul Stocker Bug Band and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, among others. In 2016 he won the African Music Award in the category best jazz album with his ZAR Orchestra.
