Hwangap and Korean Jazz

The Netherlands and South Korea have had a good diplomatic relationship for 60 years. This is celebrated, especially because a 60th anniversary, or Hwangap , is very important in Korean culture. In October, for example, Dutch jazz musicians perform at the Jarasum Jazz Festival in South Korea. In the same month, the BIMHUIS will be devoted to Korea Focus for two days, featuring five Korean bands.

The second on the program is HEO Trio. Piano, double bass, drums: the HEO Trio resembles the piano trio as we know it from jazz, but is slightly different. Band leader Daeuk Heo, for example, studied classical composition. And on the most recent album Sherpa he shows more and more Eastern influences, in clear compositions in which every instrument comes into its own. The Korean pianist now lives in France, where he founded the HEO Trio.
